Men women and children queuing outside a greengrocer's shop waiting for it to open. In a letter from Lowry dated 24th November 1948 he wrote 'Waiting for the Shop to Open is simply a queue outside a shop, waiting for the proprietor to open the door. We saw a lot of these queues during the war times, and even now quite a fair amount of it is still going on. The number 117 on the door is a reference to Lowry's address at the time, 117 Station Road, Pendlebury.
