Considered by Lowry to be his finest industrial landscape. Lowry wrote to the gallery in 1956 stating, 'This is a composite picture built up from a blank canvas. I hadn't the slightest idea of what I was going to put in the picture but it eventually came out as you see it.' Harold Wilson used this as his official Christmas Card in 1964.
