In January 2005, a bronze statue of Lowry was unveiled in Mottram, Tameside. The statute depicts Lowry sitting on a bench sketching the Mottram crown pole.
It is situated in a garden area on the corner of Hyde Road and Stalybridge Road, just 100 yards away from The Elms, where Lowry lived from 1948 up unil his death in 1976.
The area is one which it is said Lowry used to stop and chat to locals.
Unfortunatley the statue has become a target for vandals. Since being unveiled vandals have stolen his glasses and notepad and have snapped the bronze pencil he was holding.
