Set in the heart of the redeveloped Salford Quays at the end of Pier 8 the Lowry opened on 28th April 2000. It is a very unusual building constructed of stainless steel and glass.

Inside not only is there a Gallery housing the Lowry collection, there are also 2 theatres one with 1,730 seats and the other with 466 seats. It also has bars, cafes and a restaurant. The whole area covers no less than 5 football pitches.

Just 1 ½ miles from Manchster city centre the building was designed by James Stirling and Michael Wilford. It was completed in 2000 with the help for £21m of National Lottery funding. The The Lowry opened on 28th April 2000.

It is the LS Lowry to the worlds largest colllection of Lowrys, most of which were previously housed in the Salford Museum.
